The 3 Best Hikes in Müllerthal Luxembourg

The most beautiful hiking region near Belgium? It has to be Müllerthal in Luxembourg! With its impressive rock formations, challenging forest trails, and towering cliffs, it’s a true paradise for hikers. The region is aptly nicknamed “Little Switzerland”! It’s known for its 112 km long Müllerthal Trail – a classic – but did you know you can also explore shorter segments of this breathtaking route?

After several hiking trips to Müllerthal and many kilometers walked, I’m excited to share my top 3 favorite hikes in Müllerthal with you. These three routes should definitely be on your bucket list if you’re exploring the region. Curious? Here they are!

3 most beautiful hikes in the Mullerthal

1. Local Hiking Route B2 in Berdorf

The B2 trail in Berdorf, located in the beautiful Müllerthal, is one of the most impressive hikes in Luxembourg. At just 4 km long, this route is perfect for hikers of all levels. The hike starts at the tourist information point in Berdorf, where you can easily park. From here, a narrow path takes you straight into the forest, and you’ll quickly encounter the region’s spectacular rock formations. The highlight of the route is a gorge with an exciting suspension bridge and impressive rock walls towering above you, giving you an idea of why the area is also called “Little Switzerland.”

Along the trail, you’ll find cliffs, caves, and narrow gorges, some of which are marked with names on blue signs. For the adventurous hiker, there are various detours that let you scramble through the rocks, creating a unique hiking experience. You’ll often see climbers tackling the high rock faces, so be cautious when passing them. The route ends with a viewpoint overlooking the treetops of Müllerthal, after which you return to the starting point, perfect for finishing off with a bite or drink at Bistro Martbush. A short but unforgettable hike!

2. Local Hiking Route E1 in Echternach

The E1 trail from Echternach to Berdorf is a beautiful 13.5 km loop that takes you past some of the most spectacular natural highlights in Müllerthal. The route is well-marked, and you can start either at the Basilica of Echternach or the parking area at the Huel Lee caves in Berdorf. Along the way, you’ll pass notable sights such as the impressive Huel Lee caves, where millstones were once carved out, and the iconic Perekop rock, which you can climb through a narrow gorge for a stunning view of the surroundings.

In addition to these highlights, you’ll also walk through the “Labyrinth,” a series of narrow rock paths resembling a maze, and the impressive Gorges du Loup, a gorge filled with scattered rock blocks from ancient landslides. The hike ends with a descent into Echternach, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and the famous basilica. Perfect for those seeking an adventurous and varied hike, with the option to take the bus back halfway through the route thanks to Luxembourg’s free public transport!

3. Local Hiking Route W7 in Müllerthal

The W7 trail in Müllerthal is one of the most beautiful hikes in Luxembourg, taking you past the fairy-tale Schiessentümpel waterfall and the enchanting Kalktuff spring. This 11 km route starts at the tourist office in Heringer Millen, where you can park easily. From there, you’ll be guided along impressive rock formations, forests, and rivers, with the first highlight being the Schiessentümpel waterfall. This stunning waterfall, with its iconic stone bridge, is a popular spot for photos and offers a magical atmosphere in the heart of nature.

After the waterfall, the path continues with stairs and rock trails toward the Kalktuff spring, a natural spring with clear blue-green water filtered through moss. The route is well-marked with W7 signs and paintings on the rocks, offering a mix of adventurous scrambles and peaceful forest paths. After a refreshing break at the spring, you’ll walk back via wooden boardwalks towards Schiessentümpel and the starting point. This hike combines impressive nature with a serene, enchanting atmosphere and is a must-do for nature lovers in Luxembourg!

Accommodation in Müllerthal

After a tiring hike, you often don’t want to travel far, so it’s ideal to stay overnight in Müllerthal! I have two great suggestions for you, both of which are worth spending a night near the start of the most beautiful hikes in Müllerthal.

Camping Martbush

Camping Martbush is located right next to the start of the B2 trail in Berdorf and also close to one of the starting points of the E1 route towards Echternach. You can stay in a lodge, set up your tent, or find a spot for your motorhome. Behind the campsite, you’ll immediately enter the forest, and nearby you can find a place for a bite to eat and a drink. Perfect!

Hotel Restaurant Berdorfer Eck

If you prefer some comfort, Berdorfer Eck is a great choice. This B&B offers nicely decorated rooms for hikers, with a delicious fresh breakfast before you head out on your hike. I stayed in the “Chambre Artist” and loved it! The breakfast is highly recommended – super fresh and incredibly tasty – and the restaurant is also worth reserving a table at. You can enjoy top-quality meals, which taste even better after a hearty hike.
