Starting at the Tourist Center

The hike begins in the heart of Müllerthal, a hamlet between Waldbillig and Consdorf. Here, you’ll find the Tourist Center in an old watermill, where you can get all the information you need about local trails. Next to the center, there is a brasserie, public toilets, and a playground for children.

You can easily and freely park your car in the large parking lot in front of the building. If you’re coming with a motorhome, you should park it not in the parking lot but in a field across the street. Parking there is entirely free, even overnight, though without any facilities.

The W7 Trail

This trail is best known for the Schiessentümpel waterfall. The waterfall consists of three streams, with a quaint stone bridge at the top that looks like it’s come straight out of a fairytale. It’s a stunning sight and a major draw for tourists.

During my visit, maintenance work on the trail meant that the first part of the hike was diverted via Route W3 to reach the waterfall. It was a minor detour but a beautiful route nonetheless, leading up through the woods until we reached Schiessentumpel. Make sure to check with the Tourist Center before you start!

Tip: The website and Google may indicate that the trail is closed, but that’s not the case. There’s just a small detour. The hike is still very much doable.

You’ll encounter the waterfall fairly quickly on the trail. After crossing the bridge, although the trail continues to the left, you should take a moment to descend to the right for the perfect photo opportunity. Definitely worth it!

From there, follow the path along the river and up a series of steps. At the top, you can take shelter from the rain or have a snack under an overhanging rock before continuing along the forest path. Pay attention to the rock paintings; each distinctive rock formation has a name painted on it. The trail markers are also painted on the trees.

After scrambling over rocks and through the woods for a while, you’ll cross the road again to head towards the Kallektuffquell. The water from this spring flows down from higher rocks and is filtered by moss, giving it a magical turquoise color. The spring is located about two-thirds of the way through the hike. Before reaching it, you’ll walk a fair distance on smooth forest paths, less dramatic than the rocky sections at the beginning, but still worthwhile.

Once you’ve completed the loop, you’ll walk a few hundred meters on wooden boardwalks. Be careful here, as wet wood can be slippery and not all wooden planks are perfectly level. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the Kallektuffquell, where you can sit and enjoy the view.

After visiting the spring, retrace your steps back to the road you crossed earlier. Cross it again and follow a portion of the same route back – passing the Schiessentümpel waterfall – to the starting point. You might think it’s the same scenery again, but the section is so beautiful that you’ll likely enjoy it just as much the second time around.
